HEARTS: Here’s one last heart attitude to pray about, and it’s the biggie: PRIDE! Pride is the sin from which nearly every other sin grows. Pride is the temptation to put self at the center of everything, and to assume I already understand everything. “No need to talk! No need to listen or negotiate! I already know what I need to know!”
If we are to undertake the difficult task of evaluating and changing our church, we MUST pray against pride, starting with our own.
Proverbs 16:18 says: Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Philippians 2:3 commands: Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.
Like anger and unforgiveness, there is already too much pride in the world. People think they already understand everything, about themselves, and about their opponents. What is left but to shout at each other?
We don’t need to add to that noise. And such pride certainly won’t help us work together. So let’s pray against pride and lay it aside.
Lord, give us the attitude of Jesus, who let go of his heavenly glory, humbled himself and became one of us, died for us. Help us find our life’s path down the same road. Amen.
