Proverbs 11:28, 22:1-2, 23:4-5, 28:6 & 11, and 30:8

These are a sampling of the many Proverbs that express the view God wants us to have of riches.  Meditate on them often and make them part of your world view.

Jeremiah 9:23-24

Memorize this one and live your life accordingly.

Matthew 19:16-30

This is a sad story and some clear teaching about riches, straight from Jesus Himself.

Mark 12:41-44

This is an inspiring story and more clear teaching about true riches from Jesus Himself.

Luke 12:13-34

When someone asks Jesus to make someone else act fairly, He warns people about greed and selfishness, instead.  He tells a powerful, scary story about how God deals with selfishness, and then repeats His classic message about not worrying.

Luke 16:1-15 and 19-31

Jesus uses two powerful stories to make some very clear statements about riches, greed, and selfishness--and sneaks in some interesting ideas about the afterlife, as well!

1 Timothy 6

As Paul warns Timothy about false teachers and encourages him to be faithful, he includes strong, clear teaching about riches and says “godliness with contentment is great gain”.

Individual Ideas

  • Go through some of your stuff, and as you do, pray and think about what is actually good about it.  You’ll find there is some genuine goodness in stuff that keeps you warm, healthy, and living in shelter.  You will also find some stuff that you spent way too much money on, expected way too much out of, were disappointed by, don’t need, or all of the above!

  • Simplify in one category: food, clothes, music, etc.  For example, get rid of all the clothes you don’t wear anymore.  You could have a yard sale and use the money to replace a few items, but better yet, just make do with the ones you’re already wearing all the time!

  • Pass on a blessing--even if it means that you will no longer have it--and thank God for the opportunity to pass it on.
